Voltarians Boycott Akple After Six People Die From Consuming The Delicacy

Residents of Akakpokope in the South Tongu district of the Volta Region have packed their foodstuff and utensils, putting a halt to culinary activities as they have been gripped by fear following the death of six people after they ate the popular regional staple food, Akple last week Thursday.

According to Joy News reporter Maxwell Agbagba, over 50 households in the village have stopped cooking since the incident and are in a state of mourning, wailing, and fear. Two families have lost three members each after eating the food suspected to have been prepared with contaminated flour.

The husband of one of the deceased families disclosed that his wife bought the corn flour from a corn mill operator whose family also prepared their evening meal with the same flour. Fortunately for him, he was out of town at the time the food was prepared so he didn’t get to share in their demise. His wife and two children were hospitalized last Friday at dawn and unfortunately passed away the next day.

The operator of the said corn mill is himself reported to be in a critical condition also after consuming the food prepared with the flour from his mill. His wife and two children, however, have lost their lives to the deadly Akple. An eight-year-old girl, a member of the first family mentioned narrowly escaped the fate of the other six after she also ate the Killer Akple as she was treated and discharged and is reported to be doing well, even though the loss of her close relations coupled with the hunger strike in the village must make things a little complicated for the surviving child.
It has not yet been confirmed what is causing the Akple in this village to develop all these killer tendencies. However, samples of the food have been forwarded to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra for testing.
